The Best Sunscreen Products of 2017

Do not be lured by the thought that every sunscreen product out there is effective at shielding you from the sun’s harmful rays. For people who spend a lot of time outdoors, having the right sun protection means the difference between being at risk for skin cancer or not.

In 2017, a report by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) states that up to 75% of sunscreens on the market are not effective at all. Beyond that, many have ingredients that are dangerous to the human body, although the list of harmful chemicals being used in the production of these creams has greatly declined in the past years.

Sunscreens have to protect you against both UVA and UVB rays, which is normally labeled as broad spectrum. However, UVA protection is what consumers have to watch out for, because there are more of these rays and that they cause invisible damage to the skin. Over time, they will stop the immune system and may even cause melanoma.

Finding the perfect sunscreen is not possible because none of them will provide extensive defense for a long time. At best, they can shield skin for 2 hours and then it is important to reapply.

The good news is, there is no need to shell out so much money for good sunscreen. EWG identified 8 that are not just affordable, but they can be easily found in regular groceries and drug stores near you. In their 2017 report, they found these products that cost between $10 to $20 and have been rated best by EWG.

Bare Republic Mineral Sunscreen Lotion, Baby, SPF 50
Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen, Baby, SPF 30+
CeraVe Baby Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 45
Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen, SPF 50
Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection Sensitive Skin Lotion Sunscreen, SPF 50
Babyganics Mineral-Based Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 50+
Bare Republic Clearscreen Sunscreen Gel, Sport, SPF 30
Goddess Garden Organics Facial Natural Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 30

None of these products contain Vitamin A, which many might think is safe because it is natural. However, Vitamin A actually reacts to UV rays and in turn, raises skin tumor risks. In 2017, fewer sunscreen brands contain this ingredient.

Thanks to the careful study of the EWG, consumers know which sunscreens are safe and effective. These products will not have any of these dangerous ingredients that might bring harm and instead, keep the sun’s rays from causing sunburns or worse, starting skin cancer.
